Estudia las relaciones recíprocas entre las comunidades microbianas y procesos biogeoquímicos, medioambientales y climáticos en la criósfera, a distintas escalas temporales de corto, mediano y largo plazo (días a milenios). Sus estudios se focalizan en las interacciones entre microorganismos y nieve/neviza/hielo, y el proceso de congelación. Se ha dedicado al desarrollo de nuevas técnicas para el estudio de microorganismos en testigos de hielo. Sus intereses incluyen: Testigos de Hielo; Ecología de la Criósfera: biología crio-marina, ecología de nieve, microorganismos glaciares; y efecto climático glaciar.
