Hans es geógrafo de formación. En su magíster se especializó en geomorfología periglacial de los Andes centrales de Chile, especificamente en los glaciares de roca y su aporte hídrico a las cuencas. Su doctorado estuvo enfocado en reconstruir la historia glacial de Chile central durante periodos fríos/húmedos y cálidos/secos desde el Último Máximo Glacial al presente, utilizando la geomorfología y la datación con Nucleidos Cosmogénicos Terrestres (10-Be). En la actualidad continúa estudiando la historia glacial y paleoclimática de Chile central y además ha comenzado a entender los riesgos cordilleranos asociados a la actividad paraglacial del Holoceno.
